Read a product review with a critical eye

A review can combine facts, opinions and advertising. Read how the conclusion was produced before adopting it.

Find the method

Look for the exact model and whether the writer actually handled or tested it. A useful account explains what was assessed and what was not. Photographs, confident language and a rating do not establish a test method by themselves.

Check relationships and claims

Find sponsorship or affiliate disclosures and consider incentives. Verify important specifications using the manual. A review’s report of personal comfort cannot establish yours, and repeated marketing language is not independent clinical evidence. A red flag warrants investigation rather than an accusation of dishonesty.

Use the review selectively

Extract information relevant to your own requirements and keep uncertainty visible. Check current seller terms directly, as prices and policies can change. You can learn from a review without accepting its winner or purchasing any of the products it recommends.

Before you decide

Can I separate what was measured, what was reported and what was simply preferred?
